The Guitar Gym offers a unique educational experience for the aspiring guitarist, filling the gap between typical private instruction and degree-oriented music programs. The fundamental strategy of the Guitar Gym is to offer its members access to all forms of educational music media and technology while making personal instruction and tutoring easily accessible at all times, in a quiet, spacious setting.

Usually, a student takes their lesson and then goes home until the next week. At the Guitar Gym we encourage students to use our facilities before and/or after their lesson, thus maximizing the benefit of their weekly lessons; students can also sign up for multiple lessons and spend every day at the Gym, if they like. The goal of the Guitar Gym is to help fast-track our guitar students towards mastery of their instrument.

The Guitar Gym program is built around three elements:

• Private Instruction
• Book and DVD study
• Learning to use computer technology for enhanced study and recording

Lessons are taught by Gordon Kahan, an instructor with over 20 years experience as a professional guitar/music teacher, performer, recording artist and producer. Gordon has studied music at the University level, as well as with Rock legend Joe Satriani, and is the author of two guitar methods. Proficient in all styles of music, Gordon’s lessons are based around the belief that if you teach a guitarist to be a musician, not just a technician, there is no limit to the excellence they can achieve.

Comprehensive Instructional Library

Our library is stocked with hundreds of instructional methods and transcriptions, in print and DVD form, covering all styles of music. All our study stations are designed for use with headphones, which maintains a quiet study environment while allowing students to “Rock Out” to their hearts content. We have two dedicated stations for the study of instructional DVDs, as well as areas with music stands for book study. Many books have jam-along CDs which can be played in any of our practice stations.

Recording

The guitar gym has a dedicated recording studio. The studio is stocked with a Pro Tools recording system and tons of software based applications, including Reason, Acid, BFD… There is also a Roland V-Synth and vintage Fender Rhodes piano on premises. Computer-based recording skills are very useful to the developing guitarist!

The Guitar Gym was founded out of frustration with the current model of private instruction: one half-hour lesson per week in a cramped room. Our 750 square foot facility offers a spacious lesson studio, separate recording studio, and a large common area where parents can wait in comfort, and where students can study in comfort. Our students are encouraged to use every resource available to help them become the best musicians they can be. If you want to get good, this is the place to be!
